Addressing environmental design issues through zoning

YARD & Company worked with the Town of Palm Beach as part of a consultant team that updated the Town Zoning Code. The project focused on key issues including the form, scale, and massing of the built environment, maintaining the existing community character within commercial areas, and ensuring that the new zoning code integrates coastal resiliency into its new standards. The project started with an in-depth audit of the existing zoning code and identified priority areas for community engagement and project focus. To garner feedback from residents, the project team gathered in Palm Beach for one week to undertake design charrettes. The charrette was successful in communicating project goals, while facilitating in-depth discussions with residents. YARD led the branding, visualization, engagement, charrette planning and implementation, and design guideline efforts. A custom website was created for the project that incorporated interactive tools and regular project updates. To extend community participation, YARD designed a branded pocket-sized book meant to be carried around town and marked up by local residents.
